Date Night at the SuperLux!

Last week, Travis and I had the privilege of going on a date.  Yep...a real date that didn't include Owen!  Travis' parents were up for a long weekend and were gracious enough to keep Owen so we could get away for a few hours.

We have been hearing really great things about the SuperLux theater in Chestnut Hill (outside of Boston) and wanted to see a movie there.  It did NOT disappoint!  What an awesome experience!

The Showcase Superlux isn't your typical movie theater.  Dark wood, modern furniture, full bar...who knew movie-going could be such a swanky experience!  We seriously felt under-dressed.

After hanging out in the lobby for a little while, we were ushered to our theater and seats.  None of that checking-the-ticket-and-sending-you-on-your-way nonsense...you're ushered to your theater here!  They explained what was included in our ticket and how to order dinner, and left us to look over the menu.



We thought we might be the only ones at the movie.  Who else would be going to see Imitation Game (a movie that has been out for a month) on a Thursday at 5pm?  We had the theater to ourselves for a while, but finally 4 or 5 others wandered in.

With the SuperLux ticket, you get your own, reserved leather recliner.  Every two recliners are separated from another set, so you're not right next to a stranger - pretty nice!  The seats were soft, the feet reclined all the way out and there was enough room in in front of the seats for people to walk in front of you.  It's a bummer to have to put your feet up and down at other theaters with reclining chairs when there isn't enough room for those in the middle to get through (#FirstWorldProblems).  Every seat also has a call button for your waiter, if you need a refill or want to order some food during the movie.

Back to the food:  the menu was great - lots of options and creative apps!  We ordered Steak & Cheese Springrolls with spicy ketchup, the SuperLux Burger with guacamole (to split), and drinks (Travis got a S'mores martini and I got a mango strawberry mixed drink).  Everything was delicious.

Buttered popcorn and drink refills are included in the price of the ticket (along with a $5 food credit per ticket), so we asked for those immediately (of course!).  I rarely order popcorn at theaters, so I'd forgotten how good it is!  Maybe that's a good thing...








The movie was fantastic - now I see what all the fuss was about!  It was so nice to go to the movies without neon signs, loud music, or long lines.  It was a quiet evening, which is what I really needed since I haven't been feeling like myself lately.

After the movie, we decided to walk around the Chestnut Hill Mall for a while.  I haven't been to that mall without a purpose before, so I didn't realize how small it was!  So much for walking around a lot.  We spent most of our time in Brooks Brothers marveling at how CRAZY EXPENSIVE everything was.  I'm used to Brooks Brothers outlets...holy cow, prices are different at the real thing!

Guess how much the shoe below cost.  No really...guess...


SIX HUNDRED TWENTY EIGHT DOLLARS.

I don't get it.

Before heading home, we swung past Cheesecake Factory and picked up a few slices to split with Trav's parents back at the house.

It was a fun night out with my sweetest husband!

I have the sweetest husband

I have the sweetest husband ever.  If you know Travis, this is not news to you.  If you don't have the pleasure of knowing him in person...I thought it was time you found out.  :)

Travis is in Vermont for two weeks for a New Music festival (New Music on the Point).  He left last Monday, June 3rd, with his friend Steve after I'd gone to work.  When I came home from work that day, I began finding cute notes all over the house.  Like...all over.  

Every time I opened a cabinet, a box of cereal, or a book, there would be a little note from him.  Super cute, hunh?  So far I've found 12 (ish), and he tells me there are several I haven't found yet.  Here are a few I've found so far.  In true Travis style, they're super "punny".  Sorry the pics are rotten.  You get the point!  :)

Travis' Dissertation Concert & Celebrating at 51 Lincoln

Time sure does fly.  I planned on telling you about our dinner out at one of our favorite restaurants, 51 Lincoln, weeks ago...but am just now getting to it!  (Bad blogger.)  We love an excuse to go out for a nice dinner, so the fact that Travis finished his dissertation piece was no stretch of the rule - it was time to celebrate!  This time, our friends Ann, Terence, and Allyn came with us for a roaring good time!



51 Lincoln is in Newton, MA, just a few minutes down the road from us.  The restaurant is cozy and sophisticated and plastered with fantastic art!  The first time we ate there, we were mentioning to our waiter how much we liked the art, and we learned that the chef is both a culinary artist AND a visual artist!  I guess it should be no surprise that the two talents overlap - after all  cooking IS art.  (Here's a blog the chef wrote about his art if you're interested.)

When we all arrived it was time for appetizers.  Ann and Terence split a cheese and pâté plate, Allyn enjoyed the Pan Seared  Watermelon Steak (which I'd never seen before...it was interesting!), and Travis ordered his favorite - the Polenta Fries with Truffle Parmesan Dip.  The polenta fries are to die for, fluffy, and unassumingly heavy.  They're meant to be a side, so if you order them as an app, make sure you share or you won't want your dinner!  51 Lincoln also has the best corn bread and bread dip.  I don't know what it is made of exactly, but it's tomatoey, sweetish,...it's fantastic.  (You don't dip the cornbread.)  :)



For dinner, I had the Chicken Under a Brick.  The first time we visited 51 Lincoln this is what Travis got, and he couldn't stop talking about it for weeks.  Everywhere we went it was, "OMG CHICKEN UNDER A BRICK!,"  "Where can we get bricks," or "Let me tell you about the most amazing chicken ever!"  I decided to have it this time, and it was equally enjoyable as the last.  The only strange thing was a unidentifyable purple vegetable on my plate.  I took one bite and knew it wasn't for me.  After dinner, Ann wanted to give it a try (she's notably more brave about her food choices than I am) and she agreed...it was bad.  Note to self - radicchio is gross.



Travis ordered the bolognese, and has since taken up his regular "OMG 51 LINCOLN'S PASTA!!," "We need to learn how to do that!," "Let me tell you about the most amazing pasta" routine.  To his credit, it really was fantastic.  They make all of their pasta in-house and difference is obvious.



For dessert, the table split the chocolate lava cake (topped with hazelnuts and bourbon caramel) and their banana ice cream.  The perfect way to end an evening.



We had a fantastic time and can't wait to go back.

A few days later Travis had the premiere of his piece at Brandeis University!  Remember the Berry Basket Cake from last week?  It made its appearance at the reception.  Take a look & listen!

Cake Decorating How-To: Berry Basket Cake - A fun summer cake!

Saturday night, my fabulous husband had his dissertation piece performed at Brandeis University!  To complete the dissertation (FINAL!) phase of his doctoral program, he has to write a dissertation piece and paper.  His piece was a song cycle for soprano, clarinet/bass clarinet, and piano, which I'll post recordings for once they come in.

I decided to make a cake for the concert's reception.  I was going to make a Star Wars cake (since the concert took place on May (the) 4th (be with you)), but realized a little late in the game I'd need more fondant than I had for that.  Instead, I decided to make a fun spring/summer cake.  Besides the flowers that are starting to bloom all around us, I'm most excited about berries coming back into season.  No more tasteless strawberries!  Because of this, I decided to make a "berry basket" cake!  It's a super cute cake topped with fresh berries.



Here's how to make the cake

Bake two 8" cakes.  Travis requested my Chocolate Stout Cake with chocolate buttercream icing.  Then...

1 - Once they cool, level the tops (cut off the rounded tops so they stack evenly!), and cut them into four inch squares.

2 - Stack one square on top of the other, with a generous layer of icing between!  This will be your basket.  I made three baskets for my cake.  Each basket should be on a piece of cardboard.  Once stacked, put your baskets in the refrigerator (uncovered) for 45-60 minutes.

3 - Now it's time to shape your baskets.  This is a pretty simple carve - the baskets are a little smaller at the bottom than top, so carefully whittle away the edges until they're smooth.  Then cut the middle out of the top, leaving a thin edge of cake.

4 - Here's what your baskets will look like once cleaned up a little!  If there are some holes, don't worry - you can fill them in with icing.  :)

Now to give your baskets a thin layer of icing.  You'll want to thin some of the icing you're using with a little water so it glides on easily.  Give the baskets a thin layer all over, then refrigerate for 1-2 hours to let the icing set.

Remove these from the refrigerator and add a second layer of icing.  Make this icing as smooth as possible, since fondant takes the shape of whatever is under it!  Make sure to trim the piece of cardboard down so they are the size of the bottoms of the baskets now too.  Then give these puppies another short stint in the fridge.



While the cake baskets are in the refrigerator, start mixing the fondant that will cover them.  I used "Kelly Green" Wilton gel coloring.  You'll need to add Crisco to the fondant as you mix the color in, or it will get very sticky and tough to work with.


Spread Crisco over some wax paper or (clean) counter top and roll out some of your green fondant.  If your baskets are the same size as mine (4"x4"x4.5"), that means you need a 16" x 5.5"


Wrap this around circumference of the basket and over the top lip.  The center of the top will still be exposed, but that's ok!  Clean up the "seam" with an exacto knife to keep things tidy.

Now it's time to cut the drainage holes around the bottom.  Remove the fondant and use a skinny tool (or toothpick) to pull out about 1/4" of cake.  Then, using a rounded tool (or your clean finger) and push the remaining cake to smooth out the cut-outs.



Now to add the top lip.  Roll out another, thinner strip.  Mine was about 1.5" wide and 16" long.  Fold the top 1/3 over on itself.

Then, with a paintbrush, brush water along the top 1/2" of the basket, where the strip you just made will go.  (The water helps fondant stick to fondant.)

Wrap the strip around the top of your basket, with the doubled-over edge sticking up above the top of the basket (facing in).




Then fill the tops of your baskets with your (washed and dried) fruit.  I chose strawberries, blueberries, and blackberries.  You could also use raspberries or cherries if you'd like!  Put the baskets back in the refrigerator.


Now it's time to make the board for them to sit on.  Presentation is always key to a great cake.  These would be nice sitting on a table as is...but are even better on a cute board to tie the entire thing together!  I decided to make a checkered tablecloth board.  I used a large, rectangle, piece of cardboard as the base.

Mix some red fondant (I used "No-Taste Red") and roll out each color and cut 1.5" squares.  Put a thin layer of clear piping gel on the board, then layer the squares in a checkered pattern!



Then place the baskets on your beautiful board with some more piping gel.  Then cut a (yet another) thin green strip about 1/4" wide and wrap it around the bottom of each basket.

Cake's done!  Now, add a few more berries around the bottom of each basket and impress your friends with your super cute cake.



This was a huge hit at the reception - no one guessed it was a cake until they were told!
