Making Running Progress

As you may know, I started running a few months ago.  Well..."running" was a very loose term.  A few months ago I started slooooowly jogging for very (very) short stints.  I was determined to at least give running a real shot.

I'm so excited to tell you that I'm actually making progress!!   Saturday morning I set out, planning on doing five 5-minute intervals (with about 3 minutes of walking between each).  I was pretty pumped about finally reaching 5 minute intervals and loved being able to enter 25 minutes of running into my fitness app (holy calories burned!).  That morning, my running intervals were 5 minutes, 6 minutes, 5 minutes...and then I finished with a 10 minute interval.  10 minutes!  I was SO pumped, and even felt GOOD after the run!

Since I felt so good, I decided to go running again the next morning (I usually run every other day, so this was different for me).  I started off and thought I'd shoot for three 10-minute intervals that day.  When I reached 10 minutes, I thought..."What if I'm not running a 10 minute mile? I definitely want to be able to say I ran a mile without stopping", so I decided to run for 12 minutes.  Once I hit 12 minutes I thought, "Oh man...I'm still ok...I can totally do 15"....and I did!  At this point, I decided it was best not to push my luck, so I walked for 3 minutes, and then took off again and ended up running another 15 minutes.

It's so encouraging to see the progress come more quickly.  I've been celebrating 30 second interval increases for months and was becoming weary of it, but am so glad I took things slowly and didn't get frustrated, because it paid off!  I think I've finally built up a (little) base that I can build on!

I got home and called Travis to tell him my fantastic news (he was on his way to a concert with a friend) and realized I had no idea how far I'd run.  That afternoon, I hopped in my car, zero'd out my odometer, and drove my running route to see how far it was.  I was pleased to see the loop is almost exactly 3.2 miles long - just over a 5k!

Know what that means?  I did a 5k in 33 minutes and was running a 10 minute mile!  Whoop!

Now let's see if I can do it again...

  3. Wow that is amazing, good for you hun. I have no patience for running outside at all. I like to do my cardio in the gym. I need to start making some progress myself. Thanks for the motivation.

    1. Thanks Erica! I'm going to have to transition to the gym once it gets really cold up here in Boston. I've really enjoyed running outside - there's stuff to LOOK at! *Hoping* a treadmill doesn't kill my momentum!

  4. Great job, Lauren! I just started running a year ago myself. Don't you feel accomplished by what you can do or think you couldn't do? I am actually starting a weekly workout challenge series on my blog starting Wed. A friend and myself are workout through the fall holidays. Would love for you to check out it!

  5. That is so great! I've been running for a few years now and love it...well most of the time. Way to go at building your body up and going for it when you felt ready. Now, if it sounds fun to you, you can sign up for a fun 5k and celebrate your success with others. I always find races to be fun.
    Take care,

  6. Terrific job! I'm a runner and I'm so used to people asking me about pains etc they're experiencing because they started running without building up a base. Many people don't realize that the muscles you use for running are different from what you use for walking. It's so easy to get injured by doing too much too soon. I love running, it's my therapy :) Check out "Map my run" .com to create running routes and to see how far you've run (saves you from driving around to figure out your mileage)

    1. Thanks Melissa! It's been a long time comin, but can totally see how doing too much too fast would cause injury. I'm going to stay at this pace for a good while before I add more. I'll check out map my run too - that sounds much easier! Thanks!! :)

    1. Hey Jaren! You can totally do it. When I first started 3 minutes was 10 times more than I could do...you'll be fine! Just take it slowly and you'll get there! :)
